Haileybury Almaty offers students a full programme of study at Advanced Level. A-levels are taken by students at eighteen years of age. A-levels are one of the main routes into higher education and are recognised internationally. Students normally take four subjects, although they may be permitted to drop one subject in the second year. All A Level students also study for the IELTS (International English Language Teaching System) English course. A good score in this examination is required by universities as evidence that applicants have a sufficient level of English to complete university studies. Currently, students may choose from the following subjects:
Students in the Sixth form are encouraged to take part in the school's extensive and varied extra-curricular activities and contribute to the wider life of the school. Universities value both academic achievement and evidence of broader interests. Students will receive help and guidance on university applications.
Entry requirements
Prospective students can contact the admissions office to arrange an interview with the Head of Sixth form who will be pleased to discuss entry requirements.
A Level information
A levels are made up of the AS level and the A2. AS levels are taken at the end of the first year of study and A2s at the end of the second year. Each part makes up fifty per cent of the overall A level grade.
AS level
Sixth-formers can study the AS level as either a free standing qualification or as the first half of the full A level. Top universities require applicants to have full A-levels. Some countries accept AS levels as a qualification for entry to foundation courses.
Applications to British universities are made through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). 'Offers' from universities are often expressed in terms of points. A university might, for example, ask for 3 B grades or 300 UCAS points from a student who wishes to study mechanical engineering.
UCAS points
If you're applying to a British university or college, A and AS levels earn the following points in the 'UCAS Tariff':
| Grade | A Level | AS Level |
| A* | 140 | n/a |
| A | 120 | 60 |
| B | 100 | 50 |
| C | 80 | 40 |
| D | 60 | 30 |
| E | 40 | 20 |
