Craig Halsall — Headmaster

The Head is the educational and administrative leader of Haileybury Almaty, responsible for shaping the school’s academic programme, recruiting a high-quality staff, maintaining the school’s culture of excellence, organising and managing the school’s operations and developing relationships within and outside the school community. The Head is accountable to the Board of Governors of the School.

There are a number of roles that the Head of Haileybury Almaty must do, these include: providing strategic direction and leadership to the School; ensuring the continuous improvement of teaching and learning in the School; discipline in the School and ensuring an orderly, stimulating and motivational culture with a strong sense of school community; recruiting quality senior leadership, teaching and support staff; maintaining a strong understanding of Haileybury UK and its traditions as well as programmes of study, procedures and practices in all aspects of school life; marketing the school through the building of strong links with the international and local community and business interests in Almaty. Developing and producing all materials to inform all stakeholders and prospective students; developing operating budgets and providing financial accountability.

 

 


 


                      

 

 

 

Tom Wilde — Deputy Headmaster

The Deputy Headmaster plays a major role under the direction of the Headteacher in formulating the aims and objectives of the school, establishing the policies through which they shall be achieved, managing staff and resources to achieve the aims and objectives of the school and monitor progress towards their achievement.

In particular, the Deputy Headteacher has delegated responsibilities which are both schoolwide and of considerable weight. This is in addition to carrying out the professional duties of a teacher other than a Headteacher.

Some of the major roles of the Deputy are the following:

  • To assist the Headmaster in the recruitment of staff by helping to draft advertisements and shortlisting candidates where appropriate. 
  • To keep abreast of curricular and pastoral developments in the UK and worldwide and brief SLT and staff as appropriate.
  • To attend all SLT, leadership & pupil progress meetings and staff briefings.
  • To effectively coordinate all daily operational working requirements.
  • To effectively lead and manage all aspects of staff CPD

 


 


                      

 

 

 

Stephen Buckland — Director of Studies

The Director of Studies is a senior position and is also a member of the school’s management structure. The key task of this role is in leading and managing the academic life of the school as well as playing a crucial role in whole-school strategy and development. 

The key areas of responsibilities of the Director of Studies are:

  • To assist the Head and Deputy Head with the smooth running of the school.
  • To develop and produce an annual curriculum plan to include an analysis of the school’s staffing needs.
  • To produce and ensure the timely publication of an annual whole school timetable including exporting it to the school’s MIS.
  • To develop a robust system of data management including external baseline and internal assessment data to ensure effective and systematic target setting, pupil tracking and value added data analysis takes place at all levels.
  • To oversee, coordinate and monitor primary and secondary homework timetables and work sampling arrangements in liaison with the Head of Primary / Secondary. 
  • To oversee all aspects of the Examinations Officer’s work and prepare invigilation timetables.

 


 

                      

 

 

 

Rhys Thomas — Head of Secondary School

The aim of having Head of Secondary School is to provide educational and professional leadership; to manage and guide the secondary school through to its next stage of development; to work with the Headmaster and the Deputy to promote the school in the community.

The main goal of the Head of Secondary is to ensure efficient and effective running of the secondary school, as it aims to build on its current success and to establish itself as one of the top schools in the country.

Particular areas of responsiblities are outlined below:

  • To assist the Headmaster in the recruitment of staff.
  • To attend all SLT, leadership, pupil progress meetings and lead secondary staff briefings.
  • To provide effective leadership and line management for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 priorities including, but not limited to, its curriculum, welfare, pastoral issues, key stage transition, pupil references, entrance testing procedures, promotion of extra curricular activities and parents evenings.
  • To ensure the highest levels of pupil attendance and punctuality at all times. 
  • To ensure the highest standards of pupil appearance in liaison with Heads of Key Stage at all times.  

 

 


                   

 

 

 

Matt Aston — Head of Primary School

The Head of Primary school plays a vital role in delivering the vision for education at Haileybury Almaty. The Head of Primary should have effective leadership skills and work with the Headmaster to ensure the educational outcomes of all students in primary school.

The Head of Primary should also be an experienced, successful and qualified educator who is highly organised and professional, with a passion for ensuring the best possible education for girls and boys. Knowledge of the principles of positive education and cultures of thinking is standard.

The most important roles of the Head of Primary can be seen below:

  • To assist with the implementation the school’s staff appraisal and CPD policies.
  • To attend all SLT, leadership & pupil progress meetings and lead primary staff briefings.
  • To provide effective leadership and line management for Key Stages 1 and 2 priorities including, but not limited to, its curriculum, welfare, pastoral issues, key stage transition, pupil references, entrance testing procedures, promotion of extra curricular activities and parents evenings.
  • To promote pupil voice and the work of the primary student council at every opportunity in liaison with the Deputy Head.

 

 


                   

 

 

 

Svetlana Kim — Bursar

Provides operational management for the finances, property, compliance and aspects of the administration of the School. To support teaching staff in meeting the academic, pastoral and other needs of students by improving the quality of teaching and learning, thereby enabling all students to meet their full potential by providing a comprehensive and effective financial support service, and assisting in the provision of a comprehensive and effective administrative support service for all the Schools services.The Bursar is responsible for assisting the Principal in ensuring that the School’s finances, systems and premises are planned and managed in accordance with this strategy.

The most important roles of the Bursar can be seen below:

  • Oversees the overall operations of student financial services
  • Provides direction and leadership in financial management, fiscal policies review and changes.
  • Overseeing the management of the school buildings
  • Advising on scholarship and bursary funds and undertaking assessments of parents' income and assets prior to making bursary awards.

 

 


 

                      

 

Mary Eckersall — Head of Sixth Form

The Head of Sixth Form has the responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Sixth Form, the academic progress and pastoral welfare of the Sixth Form students and the operation of the Sixth Form centre. As a senior member of staff, the Head of Sixth Form contributes to the overall leadership and management of the School and be active in promoting its aims, and supporting an ethos that promotes achievement and high standards.

Key areas of responsiblities for the Head of Sixth Form:

  • To provide effective leadership and management for Key Stage 5, including Tutors and Mentors; including its curriculum, welfare, pastoral issues, key stage transition, pupil references, entrance testing procedures, promotion of extra-curricular activities and parents evenings.
  • To ensure the best possible ‘Sixth Form Experience’ for all pupils.
  • To promote pupil voice and the work of the student council at every opportunity in liaison with the Deputy Head.
  • To select and oversee Prefects including the Head boy and Head Girl.
