English: Curriculum

Head of Department: None

In each of Years 7, 8 and 9 pupils will follow a structured course in English that will enable them to develop the core skills of the subject whilst studying increasingly challenging topics. They will learn the value of drafting their ideas in exercise books and on a computer screen, and will keep a record of assessed work in individual portfolios. They will also be encouraged to reflect and comment on their performance. They will keep a record of their own reading, spelling errors and new vocabulary.

Effort and Attainment grids can be found in the Download Centre.

Year 7

Native / Near-Native Programme
In Year 7 pupils encounter a range of skills that are linked to and developed from their experience of Key Stage 2. They experience a varied programme designed to provide a foundation for their secondary English studies. They meet a range of challenging fiction and non-fiction texts. Materials are chosen for their cultural suitability and range of difficulty. They are asked to recognise implicit meaning and writers’ opinions select and explain material from a reading passage. They demonstrate understanding of features of narrative and non-narrative texts and poems by explaining and developing them in their own discussion and writing. They comment on a writer’s use of language. In their writing they experiment with a variety of forms, including informing, entertaining, persuading and describing. Additionally, there is a focus on spelling, vocabulary and grammar as pupils are encouraged to use more sophisticated grammatical structures and subject terminology.
