Year 7

HISTORY

Content
First half of year
The Romans  Pupils will consider how the Roman Empire was governed, what life was like in the provinces.
Text book used: Contrasts and Connections by Shephard et al (Hodder Murray)
Second half of year
The making of the UK  Pupils will consider  life in the 1500s, the Reformation, civil war and the birth of the United Kingdom.
Text book used: Societies in change by Shephard et al (Hodder Murray)
 
GEOGRAPHY   

Content
Term 1
Rivers Pupils will look at how rivers shape the land and how people have sought to manage them.
Atlas skills Pupils will develop their ability to use and understand Atlas maps.
Term 2
Antarctica Pupils will learn about its fragile environment and consider the threat posed by human activities.
Tourism Pupils will learn about the growing importance of tourism, its benefits and problems and how these can be carefully managed.
Term 3
UKPupils will learn about the UK as an example of a More Economically Developed Country.

Year 8

HISTORY

Content
First half of the year
Native Americans Pupils will consider the origins and lifestyles of Native Americans and how historians have reconstructed their past before studying the impact of Europeans and Native Americans today.
Second half of the year
Industrial Revolution Pupils will focus on the causes of the Revolution and its impact on life in Britain.

Content
Term 1
Coasts Pupils will firstly study how the sea shapes the land and its impact on human activity.
Food and farming Pupils will study different methods of farming from around the world and look at contemporary issues in food provision.
Term 2
Savannahgrasslands Pupils will study the distribution, climate, vegetation and wildlife of this threatened environment before focusing on how they can be managed sustainably.
Climate change Pupils will look at the possible causes and consequences of climate change and how we can respond to this contemporary issue.
Term 3
Kenya Pupils will study Kenya as an example of a Less Economically Developed Country.

Year 9

HISTORY

Content
First half of the year
The French Revolution. Pupils will consider the causes of the Revolution, whether it made France a fairer country and whether Napoleon betrayed the Revolution.
Text book used: Societies in Change by Shephard et al (Hodder Murray)
Second half of the year
The World Wars, focusing on the main events and key features of the First World War and the Second World War.  Text book used: Peace and War by Shephard et al (Hodder Murray)

Natural Hazards  Pupils will study the impact of these on human activity.
Term 2
Development  Pupils will focus on the contrasts in world development and the challenges facing countries as they seek to develop.
Globalisation  focuses on the challenges and opportunities presented by increasing world integration                                                                                                
Term 3   
ChinaPupils will focuson this exciting region and its increasing importance in the modern world.

HISTORY  IGCSE

Reasons for studying History (0470):
History is an interesting and very relevant subject. You may well ask “What use is History to me? Why do I need to know what happened in the past?”  History is more than just what happened, it teaches a range of valuable and transferable skills.


How will History be useful to you in the future?
Such skills are highly regarded by employers since they show that you can retain, analyse and present information effectively.  In short, it shows a trained mind. 
History can be an important part of your education. At IGCSE it covers Politics, Sociology, Economics and an understanding of the background to current affairs.


What you will be studying: 
You will study twentieth century history with a focus on International Relations since 1919.  This will cover the following topics:
The Peace Treaties of 1919-23
The League of Nations
The causes of the Second World War
The Cold War
The USA’s response to communism
The USSR’s control over Eastern Europe
The United Nations Organisation You will also complete an in depth study of Russia from 1905 to 1941


How you will learn: 
A variety of learning approaches will be used.  These will include the development of historical skills through using evidence and information, discussion as a class and in groups, videos and ICT.


How you will be assessed: 
40%                An examination on the content covered during the course.
33%                An in-depth examination on one of the topics covered during the course using historical sources.
27%                An examination of Russia from 1905 to 1941.

 

GEOGRAPHY IGCSE

Reasons for studying Geography (0470):

In IGCSE Geography you will learn about a variety of global issues which are likely to affect people’s lives now and in the future. The emphasis on issues means that many topics covered will be straight from the news headlines, but you will also learn about the environmental issues and problems being faced in many of the world’s poorer countries.


 Will Geography be useful to you in the future?
 The course will help you to develop a knowledge and understanding of local, national and global concerns. You will gain a number of key skills such as map reading, photo interpretation, analysis of information, debating and problem solving, which besides being of use in this subject may help your success in other subjects.


 What you will be studying: 
There are three major themes:
Population and settlement- World population growth, migration, population structure, population density and rural and urban settlements. 
The Natural environment- Plate tectonics, landforms and landscape processes, weather, climate and natural vegetation. 
Economic development and the use of resources- Agricultural systems, industrial systems, leisure activities and tourism, energy and water resources and resource conservation and management.


How you will learn: 
You will acquire a range of skills through field work, map and atlas work, using IT, graphic and presentational work, discussion and group work using a number of different resources.  We use a variety of teaching styles including interactive lessons to access all students’ learning styles.


How you will be assessed: 
45%                 An examination on the content covered in the three major themes.
27.5%              A skills-based examination.
27.5%              An examination on fieldwork techniques.
