Head of Department:
Mr Wouter Kolkman
This is an exciting course for those pupils who have enjoyed ICT in Year 9 and wish to continue their interest and acquire more advanced computing qualification.
Reasons to study IGCSE ICT include:
|
|
The differences between Year 9 ICT and IGCSE ICT are chiefly
- Smaller classes, so you will have more individual help
- The chance to enjoy working with a wide variety of programs and computer hardware
- You will have more time for independent work
- Greater emphasis on planning and practical work.
The subject will be taught through 8 interrelated units of study
- Types and Components of Computer Systems
- Input and Output Devices
- Storage Devices and Media
- Computer Networks
- Data Types
- The Effects of Using ICT
- The ways in which ICT is used
- Systems Analysis and Design
By the end of the course students should be able to
- use e-mail and the Internet to gather and communicate information;
- use wordprocessing facilities to prepare documents;
- use database facilities to manipulate data to solve problems and represent data graphically;
- integrate data from different sources into a single document or report;
- produce output in a specified format;
- use a spreadsheet to create and test a data model, extracting and summarising data;
- represent data as information in a variety of chart formats;
- create a structured website with style sheets, tables and hyperlinks;
- create and control an interactive presentation.
Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in relation to
- the functions of the main hardware and software components of computer systems;
- the networking of information-processing systems;
- the ways in which information and communication technology is used and the effects of its use;
- the stages and methods of system analysis and design;computing terminology.
Assessment
The course will be assessed in the form of 3 papers.
All students will be entered for all papers. A written paper of 80 marks will assess knowledge and understanding of the subject. This paper will contain mainly questions requiring a short response, a word, a phrase or one or two sentences, although there will be some questions requiring a more extended response.
Two practical tests will assess practical skills.
The weighting will be 40% knowledge and understanding, 60% practical.
