Kazakh: Curriculum


Head of Department: Ms Karlygash Kazhdarova

Kazakh is taught as a second language forall local pupils. The aim of theKazakh Department at Haileybury Almaty is to help pupils speak fluent Kazakh.Pupils learn the language through wide range of reading, listening, writing andspeaking activities. Most of the reading texts are adapted to the levels andinterests of the pupils in class. Starting from Year 6 Kazakh History is taught as a separate subject. Also Geography is taught in Year 8 as anadditional unit.All texts are also adapted and the aim is to get to know the History and Geography through the target language.


Key Stage 1

Kazakh is taught by main topics in this stage. Pupils show their understanding simple classroomcommands, short statements and questions. They also perform confidence intalking and listening. They listen carefully and respond.

Key Stage 2

Kazakh is taught bymain topics in this stage. Pupils show their understanding a range of familiar statements and questions. Pupilsgive short, simple responses to what they see and hear. Pupils display what theyunderstand: short texts and dialogues. Pupils write two or three shortsentences on familiar topics.

Year 3

Key Stage 3

Kazakh is taught by modules in this stage.Each module consists of phonetic, lexical and grammar materials.Pupils’ learning is organized through discussions, where they give theiropinions in a target language keeping to its norms. Language acquisition isassessed according to the assessment criteria at the end of each module. In ordernot to overload pupils home task is given once a week as agreed with other departments.
