Juniors

Head of Department: Mr Luke Roberts

The Junior School builds on the firm foundation that pupils have received in the Infants School by providing a positive, engaging and supportive learning environment for children aged 7 to 11 years.  The children’s needs are at the heart of our school ethos, and we provide our pupils with an environment which promotes opportunities for academic achievement and nurtures individual talents.  We see carefully planned differentiation as the key to giving the right amount of support or challenge to our pupils, and we work closely with the English Support and Learning Support departments to achieve this aim.  We want our pupils to be excited and inspired by learning, becoming increasingly independent learners as they make their way through the Junior School.

Our broad and balanced curriculum is based on the British National Curriculum but has been adapted in order to reflect our international and Kazakh context.  Subjects are usually taught separately, but cross-curricular links are also made where it is seen to enhance the learning.  Mathematics, English, Science and Humanities (Geography and History) are taught in English by English speaking staff.  Kazakh, Russian, Music, Art, Design Technology, Physical Education and Information Technology are taught mainly by specialist teachers.  Our classes are very well-resourced with up-to-date texts and schemes of work.  We encourage our pupils to use ICT across the curriculum and every classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard.

We are committed to educating the whole child in the Junior School.  Our extensive Extra-Curricular programme provides children with purposeful activities such as the school orchestra and choir, the environmental club and the rugby club.  There is a School Council which is elected by the pupils who meet regularly to discuss ways to improve and develop our school.   The House system is also very strong in the Junior School, promoting healthy competition, positive behaviour traits and the opportunity to mix with pupils of different ages across the school.

In the Junior School we work together – parent, teacher and child – to encourage children to be responsible, confident and hardworking global citizens.  Our aim is to nurture children who successfully develop the habits of life-long learning that will serve them well in the Middle School and beyond.
