"Go Down Deep Enough Into Anything and You Will Find Mathematics"
~dean schlicter

Mathematics is an essential part of anyones education; its influence in the world is pervasive, and those with an understanding of its nature possess a powerful tool.

The Haileybury Almaty Mathematics department promotes and facilitates excellent learning and teaching of mathematicsOur aim is to enable pupils to:

  • develop their mathematical knowledge and skills in a way which encourages confidence and provides satisfaction and enjoyment;
  • develop an understanding of mathematical principles and an appreciation of mathematics as a logical and coherent subject;
  • acquire a range of mathematics skills, particularly those which will enable them to use applications of mathematics in the context of everyday situations and of other subjects they may be studying;
  • develop an ability to analyse problems logically, recognise when and how a situation may be represented mathematically, identify and interpret relevant factors and, where necessary, select an appropriate mathematical method to solve the problem;
  • use mathematics as a means of communication with emphasis on the use of clear expression;
  • acquire the mathematical background necessary for further study in this or related subjects;
  • reach individual assessment targets for KS3 National Curriculum levels, and for external IGCSE and A-level examinations.

 A broad range of students will study mathematics at Haileybury Almaty. The curriculum is built so that students can generally meet similar material and yet work towards very different expectations. Expectations are given for all, most and some students to achieve.

Students are encouraged not to see mathematics as a discrete academic subject and during their time at the school they will complete numerous tasks exploring mathematics relationship with the world.
Students are encourage to think about how they approach their mathematical learning with an emphasis on written presentation, communication, problem solving, independent learning and collaboration.

Starting with the foundations of the English primary curriculum, students eventually progress on to complete mathematics courses at university entrance level. Assessment across senior school can be seen as a gradual progression from assessment for learning to a focus on assessment for examination performance. Mathematics qualifications are an essential requirement for many university courses and prominent careers and the understanding and skills developed through studying Mathematics remain as essential as ever.
