Head of Department:
Ms Phoebe Gourlay

Music is a thriving part of school life in Haileybury Almaty. As a school which embraces many different cultures and backgrounds, Music classes give pupils an opportunity to experience and discover music from a wide range of styles and genres. This helps to foster an attitude of discovery and gives pupils the ability to better understand the world around them through the medium of Music.
All pupils in Years 1-9 have weekly 70 minute music classes which aim to promote understanding and appreciation of music.Through listening, performing and composing at all levels, pupils experience music as an active subject which promotes self discipline, team work and above all, enjoyment. Many pupils also choose to study Music as an exam level subject at IGCSE.
We aim to equip pupils with musical skills which will enable them to develop their personal enjoyment of music through learning an instrument. All pupils are encouraged to learn an instrument and there is a team of dedicated, specialist musicians who provide one to one tuition on a wide range of instruments.
The Music department is spacious and well equipped with nine rooms available for pupils to practise in at any time, alongside large teaching rooms and a state of the art recording studio.
There are regular concerts for pupils to perform in, as well as drama and music productions, and opportunities to perform in assemblies. This term, the first Interhouse Music competition is taking place. Music is most enjoyable when shared with others and the Music department offers many extra curricular activities including junior choir, Kazakh song club, Senior singers, Music theory and ensemble groups for string and wind players.
